Small Garden Inspiration | High Street Shopping

Last June I was sat in Jos’ Nan’s garden in a heatwave planning in my bullet journal what I wanted to do with my own green space. A year on and we’ve come full circle and we’re just about getting there with all the ideas I had on that sunny day.

My garden is by no means small in terms of square footage but it’s compartmented and bitty and there’s no lawn but a whole load of patio. Out the front we have big old borders full of lovely plants and flowers that Jos’ Mum put in when it was hers and the driveway. We’ve put up picket fencing between Jos’ parents and ours to stop the dogs jumping in and digging up all our lovely things and we have a big paving slabbed area of patio under the living room window which I have filled with pots and hanging baskets to complement the clematis that surrounds the front door.

The garden wraps around the side of the house which is all concreted over and this weekend I finally attacked all the brambles that had taken over and you can finally see the border again, covered in ivy and ferns and not ready to savage your arms as you walk past. The washing line is out this area and the shed is up some steps which I plan to line with more pots so I can look out from my kitchen sink.

But the back of the house is where the main transformation has taken place. My kitchen overlooks what used to be ‘the secret garden’ so when we sectioned it off from Jos’ parents we popped a gate into the fence posts and hacked it all back. Joss has laid a new path with new sleepers forming a huge bed which me and Mum filled with ferns and lavender and plants and it’s looking so colourful and fab. Down the path there is a few steps made from sleepers which takes you under the trellis which is covered in a rambling rose and out onto a big empty patio space bordered by acers and ferns and a mahooosive mock orange. We’ve chopped back all the low hanging branches from the oak tree to let in loads of light and now we can see over into our orchards and I should finally be able to make use of our patio set and bbq which have patiently been sat in the shed since last summer.

I feel like we are finally making progress and I am so excited to get the last jobs done and start thinking about all the finishing touches. Shop my small garden buys below (and guess which ones are firmly in my basket!!)
